Separatist groups in Northern Ireland could gain strength, says professor

In an interview with CNN This Tuesday (13), Renato de Almeida Vieira e Silva, university professor and expert on royalty said that separatist movements in Northern Ireland could gain strength, with the death of Queen Elizabeth II – who died on the last day (8) , in Scotland.

According to him, Charles III must face a delicate situation. “Relations between Northern Ireland and London were always very difficult”.

“One of the ways in which [para amenizar a situação] was to try to find in the groups that previously practiced terrorist acts for the independence [irlandesa] and bring them in as representatives within parliament. It was a difficult negotiation, which has produced reasonable effects so far,” he said.

However, the professor says that “we cannot say that separatist movements will not form with a little more force and a little more pressure”.

“We hope that they will not translate into dramatic moments like there have been for almost a century,” said Almeida ieira e Silva.

On Tuesday, King Charles III said he will seek the welfare of the people of Northern Ireland, following the example of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.

“I take up my new duties determined to seek the welfare of all the inhabitants of Northern Ireland,” said Charles, recalling the “brilliant example” set by his mother.

Charles III and his wife Camilla, the Queen Consort, arrived in Northern Ireland on Tuesday as thousands of people continue to parade before the Queen’s coffin in Edinburgh, Scotland.
