The clothing – textile chain in Greece largely covered in 2021 the losses caused by the pandemic in 2020 according to data from the Association of Knitting – Ready-made Garments of Greece (SEPEE).
Both the increase of exports by 33.8% and the significant increase of retail sales in the domestic market by 43.4% contributed to this.
From the second quarter until the end of 2021, there was a significant recovery of the industry and a gradual return to levels approaching pre-pandemic.
Specifically for the whole of 2021:
The industrial production index increased by 24.6% in clothing and 8.6% in textiles.
Exports that are the locomotive of the industry recorded a significant increase of 33.8% and exceeded 2.1 billion euros compared to 1.58 billion in 2020.
Garment exports increased by 23.4% and reached € 950 million. This performance is only 5% behind the exports of 2019, ie before the pandemic.
In the textile sector, exports increased by 16.2% and amounted to € 450 million.
The exports of the primary sector, cotton, have a very important contribution to this positive course of the chain, recording a record increase of 68% and amounting to € 720 million.
It should be noted, however, that the very large increase in cotton exports is mainly due to the significant increase in the price of cotton.
In terms of imports, an increase of 16.7% was recorded. The increase was higher in textile imports by 24%, while clothing imports increased by 14%.
Finally, retail sales of clothing in the domestic market increased significantly by 43.4% and reached a value of 2.6 billion euros for companies that keep bibliographic books.
In the last quarter, clothing retail sales increased by 110% compared to the last quarter of 2020.
In total, in 2021, retail sales, with the exception of the first quarter, returned to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
