Sepultura vocalist talks about Eloy’s departure: “Completely surreal”

THE Sepultura vocalist Derrick Green commented on the departure of the band’s drummer, Eloy Casagrande, earlier this year, days before the band’s farewell tour began, and said he was “in shock” by the news. Eloy was confirmed as Slipknot’s new drummer shortly after.

“I think I was literally going to get on a plane the next day to start rehearsals. Andreas [Kisser, guitarrista do Sepultura] was like, ‘Hey…’ And I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ And he was like, ‘He’s out.'” the singer said in an interview with the One Life One Chance podcast with Toby Morse about the moment he found out about Eloy’s departure.

“I was kind of falling into a black hole, like, ‘What are you talking about?’ It was totally surreal. It was literally in slow motion. I was just trying to catch my breath. And he explained everything,” she added.

According to Green, the band met with the drummer so he could explain his departure: “[Eloy] came in and was like, ‘I’m doing this show. I signed a contract. And I’m out.’ And I was just trying to wrap my head around it, because I’d been playing with this guy for 13 years.”

“I was really in shock. I was like, ‘Man, what are we going to do?’” Green said.

Eloy Casagrande’s departure from Sepultura was announced by the band a few days before the start of the “Celebrating Life Through Death” tour, which marks the group’s farewell from the stage. The confirmation as Slipknot’s new drummer came just a few months later, amid speculation from the band’s Brazilian fans on social media.

American drummer Greyson Nekrutman has been confirmed as Eloy’s replacement and will play with Sepultura until the end of the tour — which continues until November, with performances in Brazil and Europe.
