Serbia: Demonstrations of Students requesting early parliamentary elections

“We want elections” today shouted thousands of students who marched in Belgrade and other cities in Serbia. In the capital, students marched on the main streets of the city that ended up in front of the government building. “How many lives need to be in danger or lose to end corruption,” was the message of protest in Belgrade. Students, who are complaining for more than half a year, demand that criminal and political responsibilities be attributed to the tragedy in Novi Sad where, on November 1, 2024, 16 people died when the cornice collapsed at the train station. In early May, students called for the announcement of early parliamentary elections, noting that “deeply rooted corruption does not allow institutions to operate independently and democratically”. They also announced that the call for elections will submit their own ballot paper consisting of experts, personalities outside today’s political scene.
