Serbia: General elections held on Sunday – Vucic remains favorite to win

Elections at all levels of government will be held in Serbia next Sunday (April 3rd). Eight candidates of parties and political combinations are running for the office of President of the Republic. The favorite for the victory is considered the current president Aleksandar Vuτςi. Who, according to all the polls, is expected to emerge victorious from the first round, receiving a percentage of more than 50%. The opposition in the presidential election is coming down divided into three fronts: the far-right-patriotic, the Europeans (center-right-center-left) and the environmentalists. The polls for the presidential elections bring the candidate of the European generals e.a. second. Zdravko Pain.

The situation is similar at the level of parliamentary elections. Aleksandar Vuτςiτς’s Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) is expected to win the election with 45% of the vote, according to opinion polls. In second place are the Europeans led by Marinika Tepic and in third place are the Socialists of Ivica Dacic. Four other parties and coalitions are expected to exceed the 3% threshold and be represented in parliament.

The situation regarding the result of the elections in the municipality of Belgrade remains doubtful. Vuτςiτς’s party’s dominance in the capital is seriously threatened by environmentalists and the European coalition.

During the pre-election period, Aleksandar Vuτςiτς’s ruling Progressive Party (SNS) highlighted economic growth, rebuilding the country, public works, increasing foreign investment, and curbing inflation. The center-right and center-left coalition focused on the need to democratize the country, fight corruption and organized economic crime, transparency, boost entrepreneurship through transparent conditions, raise the minimum wage and speed up reforms for European integration. . In the last month, the situation in Ukraine has dominated the election campaign of some parties. The far-right and so-called patriotic parties have openly supported the Russian invasion, while Dacic’s Socialists have put the issue on the election agenda and vowed never to vote in favor of imposing sanctions on Russia if it is on the agenda of the next parliament. Vuτςiτς’s party, as well as pro-European parties, have avoided addressing the issue of Ukraine, apparently in order not to upset a large part of the public possessed by pro-Russian sentiments.

Opposition parties have expressed strong concerns about the democratic nature of the electoral process. There are already allegations that the Vuτςiτς regime intends to alter the result by naturalizing tens of thousands of Bosnia and Herzegovina nationals so that they can vote in the upcoming elections in Serbia. The problem is particularly acute in Belgrade, where ordinary citizens complain every day that virtually non-existent people have been declared at their place of residence.

In Kosovo, the ballot boxes for the Serbian elections will not open after the government of Albin Kurti banned the operation of polling stations. Kosovo Serbs will be able to exercise their right to vote in a city in central Serbia.
