Serbia: Solz urges Vucic to impose immediate sanctions on Russia

German Chancellor Olaf Soltz has called on Belgrade to impose sanctions on Russia and to align itself with the policies of all European countries.

This was stated by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic after a meeting with the German Chancellor in Belgrade.

Olaf Soltz confirmed in a joint press conference that he had raised the issue, saying that “all acceding countries have an obligation to implement the European Union’s common foreign policy”. The German chancellor added that he asked Serbia not to postpone the decision to impose sanctions on Russia and “to do so immediately as long as the issue is relevant”.

President Vuτςiτς said that Serbia’s position on sanctions is complicated because “Serbia depends on Russia’s position in the UN Security Council on the Kosovo issue”.

Kosovo also addressed the Vuτςi –Soltz meeting, and the German Chancellor called for commitment to the EU-sponsored dialogue aimed at finding a viable solution soon and paving the way for European integration.

Olaf Solz reiterated in Belgrade, as he did this morning in Pristina, that dialogue should lead to mutual recognition.

In a press conference, Aleksandar Vucic questioned the wording, noting that no official EU document states that the purpose of the dialogue is mutual recognition, but the normalization of Belgrade-Pristina relations by signing a binding agreement.

Regarding the European perspective of the Western Balkans, the German Chancellor stressed the need to speed up the procedures for the countries of the region to become members of the European family in the near future. “This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Thessaloniki agenda that laid the foundations for the European perspective of the countries in the region, and there is now a need to give new impetus to the process,” Olaf Solz said.

Regarding the war in Ukraine, Chancellor Soltz stressed that Russia can not impose the terms of peace, but must first accept the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

The German Chancellor visited Pristina this morning, followed by a visit to Belgrade in the afternoon, while in the evening he will be in Thessaloniki where he will attend a working lunch given by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to the leaders of the countries participating in the Cooperation Process Summit. in South East Europe (SEECP). Aleksandar Vucic will be at the same table.
