Serbia: Triple cases of new coronavirus cases in the last 2 days

There is a rapid increase in daily cases in Serbia. In the last 24 hours, 7,488 cases were confirmed, which is three times more than the daily cases on January 3. This increase is due to the predominance of the “Omicron” mutation in combination with the relaxation that prevailed during the holidays.

Experts estimate that in the coming days the daily cases will exceed 30,000 since the Christmas holiday that is celebrated in Serbia, according to the old Julian calendar, on January 7th.

The epidemiologists consider the fact that the school holidays have been extended for two weeks and the schools will be closed until January 24, when the spread of the disease will be limited. Nevertheless, they believe that if the restrictive measures regarding the use of the mask and the operation of the restaurants and entertainment shops are not strictly observed, then at the end of January the situation will become dramatic.

Concern is also expressed due to the low rate of vaccinations that does not exceed 55% while the response for the third dose is small. As of today, some hospitals in Belgrade are returning to Covid status to deal with the new wave of pandemics. The coronavirus reference hospitals treat 2,194 patients, of which 74 are intubated.

In Serbia, 12,831 people have died from coronavirus complications since the outbreak of the pandemic.
