Sunday 3 September the French director and actor Mathieu Kassovitz fell victim to a serious accident on the track of the Linas-Monthléry autodrome, south of Paris. Passionate about motorcycles, he was participating in one driving training course when he lost control of his two-wheeler and went off the road after a curve, ending up on a protective barrier. The impact then threw him off the track, where he is crashed to the ground. The accident happened in front of her daughter’s eyes Carmenwho was taking the course with him.
The 56-year-old Kassovitz – who revealed himself to the general public in 1995 with the film I hate it (which earned him the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival) and has been featured in films such as The Fifth Element by LucBesson e The fabulous world of Amélie of Costa-Gavras – it was rushed to the neighbor Kremlin-Bicetre hospital. Until this morning his conditions were described as “worrying”. The latest updates, however, give hope that, albeit not in a short time, he will be able to recover: according to the French tabloid Gala Kassovitz has sustained head trauma and severe fractures – especially in the pelvis and ankles -, is found in induced coma«but it’s not life threatening”.
Mathieu’s passion for motorcycling exploded about 20 years agowhen he lived in the United States. He got his driving license and Los Angeles and hasn’t been separated from two wheels since. «I am a very careful pilot. I had too many friends disappeared for a moment… Everything goes well with you, but then… It’s a matter of a second», he said in an interview some time ago. Exactly what happened on the Linas-Monthléry racetrack is not yet known. To shed light on the matter it was opened an inquiry.
What is certain is that the incident took place in full view of the Mathew’s 21-year-old daughter, Carmenhad in 2002 by his ex-wife, the actress Julie Mauduech. Carmen, who has followed in the footsteps of her parents, has already acted in major films such as Ma nuit by Antoinette Boulat and was later cast in the series Stalk.
