Service sector is the flagship of occupations, says economist about PNAD data

In an interview with CNN this Sunday (3), the economist and president of Ibret, Hélio Zylberstajn, commented on the unemployment rate in Brazil, released by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) last Thursday (30).

Zylberstajn said the service sector was the “flagship” of occupations in the quarter ended in May. The economist also explains the origin of the new workers.

“One million four hundred thousand came from unemployment and nine hundred thousand came from outside the labor market. The workforce grew and these nine hundred thousand people were absorbed… it was a quarter that not only assimilated those who were unemployed, but also those who were out of the market, who did not enter the statistics, the discouraged ”, he explains.

Zylberstajn also spoke about average income. According to him, even though the average income has fallen compared to the same period last year, it is still positive that there has not been a drop in the analyzed quarter.

“In this quarter, the average income did not fall, and it should have fallen not because of inflation, but because of this huge volume of people who joined the occupation, since those who enter earn less than those who were already employed”.

According to the data released, the unemployment rate in Brazil was 9.8% in the quarter ended in May, the lowest rate for the period since 2015, when it was 8.3%.
