The purchasing managers index (PMI) of services in the United States rose from 51.2 in January to 56.5 in February, in the final reading made by IHS Markit. The result was below the forecast of 56.8 made by analysts consulted by the The Wall Street Journal and the preliminary reading at 56.7.
The composite PMI, in turn, advanced from 51.1 in January to 55.9 in February, slightly below the first reading of the data.
In a comment, IHS Markit highlights that there was a “strong resumption” of business activity in February, as measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus were the most relaxed since November 2020.
The consultancy’s chief economist, Chris Williamson, says the data adds to evidence from industry surveys that the Ômicron wave had only a modest and brief impact on the US economy.
