SESI offers education and better quality of life to industry workers

THE Industry Social Service (SESI) was created 75 years ago to serve industries and their workers in managing the occupational health and safety (OHS) and in promoting the health and education of workers, their dependents and communities. It currently has 514 mobile units, 116 healthy living units and 526 schools, being present in 2,400 Brazilian municipalities.

The numbers are expressive, as well as the actions and projects aimed at industries.

HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK

Last year alone, SESI benefited 3.7 million people with occupational health and safety services.

With the Covid-19 pandemic, it developed health protocols to help workers prevent themselves from the virus in the workplace and, as a result, feel safer, more involved and protected. About 9,700 companies used these protocols and technical guidelines, benefiting almost 260,000 workers.

Of the 346 Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) centers, nine are dedicated to innovation to meet the needs of Brazilian industry in the areas of health technologies, such as: occupational hygiene, psychosocial factors, longevity and productivity, ergonomics, economics for health and safety, disability prevention, lifestyle and health, and occupational health and safety management systems.

And to reduce company costs with absences and drop in productivity, and improve the well-being and health of workers, SESI Innovation Centers they work in a network to serve companies across the country, and also rely on partnerships with international institutions of reference in occupational safety and health, such as the Johns Hopkins University, The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) it’s the Dutch Institute of Innovation (TNO).

HEALTH

Acting in the fight against Covid-19 with companies, in addition to the protocols and guidelines developed, SESI adopted preventive measures such as testing and teleservice to help protect and target the health of workers.

Furthermore, SESI also placed its entire structure, located in 2,400 municipalities, at the disposal of the National Immunization Program. About half a million people have already been vaccinated with direct support from the entity.

EDUCATION

SESI has one of the largest teaching networks in the country. In 2020, it received 496,000 enrollments in basic and continuing education for young people and adults.

Providing an excellent education requires a constant evolution in teaching and learning methods. In order for students to be prepared for the job market, where technology and information change rapidly, SESI and SENAI apply the educational approach known as STEAM, English acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. Disciplines considered strategic for the next generations to know how to deal with issues such as artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, climate change and contribute to a fairer society.

Another differential is the inclusion of robotics, subject taught in all 526 schools. Robotics is the learning revolution, a powerful pedagogical tool that encourages students to solve problems in modern society through socio-emotional skills, such as creativity and communication.

Learning in robotics is more effective because students build their own knowledge and share what they’ve learned during presentations. This awakens interest in research, exact sciences and engineering, in addition to developing the soft skills, fundamental skills for the professional of the future, such as proactivity, investigative spirit, planning, dialogue and decision-making.

SESI teams are the biggest champions of national robotics tournaments and have already won in several international competitions, such as the Global Innovation Awards (FAMILY).

Still in the field of education, SESI and SENAI are pioneers in the implementation of the New High School in the Country: Itinerary 5, which combines regular education with technical and professional training. Students are prepared for the current challenges of the job market, with skills linked to the industry of the future and contribute to the innovation of companies, productivity and the country’s economy.

SESI is also the most active entity in the program COME (Youth and Adult Education), having already served more than one million workers in this modality. Students have recognized prior knowledge and can complete studies focused on their professional reality.

SESI and SENAI are the institutions that most contribute to professional training in Brazil. This achievement is the result of constant work, which has a transforming power in people’s lives and contributes to the country’s economic and social development.
