Sespo, new social

This article is published in number 8 of Vanity Fair on newsstands until February 23, 2021

“If I had to try to guess how and why I managed to build the following I have today, I would say that perhaps it was my being sincere. I did not hide behind a fictional character and I tried to pass what I am without filters, for better or for worse ». If you are among his two million followers, you know that Sespo is really like that: a smart guy, who knows how to have fun, with a clean face and the right amount of cheerfulness in his twenties.

He’s not vulgar, he doesn’t get angry and you always end up laughing with him. His name is Edoardo Esposito, but everyone knows him as Sespo: «The name was born by chance: a typo while I was playing in a FIFA championship. Sespo instead of Espo, the abbreviation of my surname ».

How was your debut?
«I have been passionate about the world of social media since I was a child. I followed YouTube a lot and at sixteen I decided to try to make some content too. I started
for fun, without any expectations. I enjoyed shooting and editing videos. The first one I posted was about telephone pranks made with a friend. To see him again
now, it embarrasses me to see myself so small and completely unaware ».

When did you get the feeling it was working?
“Long after we opened the channel. I did a lot of apprenticeship. Only in 2018, when I hit 100,000 subscribers on YouTube, did I realize what I was doing. A community of loyal kids was forming and following me and I started to think a little bigger. My goal was to try to bring contents different from the usual, more structured ».

When, from pure fun, did it become a job?
«When the numbers grew, some companies started contacting me proposing collaborations and the agencies became interested in me. I was gratified by the recognition, but I wasn’t sure how to handle it. Being followed by the right people was essential to avoid being ripped off: my family was very close to me and kept me grounded, helping me in the most difficult choices and in entering the world of work with ethics and a method. Over time I realized that this sudden “popularity” could have made me go crazy and lose sight of the reality of important things ».

He has a friend, Valerio, with whom he wrote two books, and a girlfriend, Rosalba, with whom he often appears in his videos. Can you tell us about the relationship you have with them?
«Valerio is a fundamental part of my life. Together we have memories that I will carry with me forever. Having shared the whole path and above all a very intense tour around the whole of Italy has united us even more than before. What can I say about Rosalba? We live together: we support and bear each other ».

She moves between YouTube and TikTok: what do social networks represent for you? What space is there for others?
«Social networks are one of the best things that have happened to me. Leaving aside the job issue, social media have allowed me to express myself 100 percent. The beauty of the web is that there are no pre-established formulas: if you are good at something and you see that you do it with passion, sooner or later your chance will arise. This is how it happened to me: I never pursued fame, I simply wanted to tell myself, have fun and entertain others. And over time, as well as a possibility, the web has also become a responsibility. I try to be as correct and polite as possible because I know that a lot of kids spend a lot of time watching what I do ».

Does all this connection bring us closer or further away?
«It is this connection that has allowed me to meet Rosalba and many friends. Without the web my life would be completely different. The downside though
they are the people who approach me only because I am Sespo, with no intention of meeting Edoardo ».

He also composed songs: what space does music have in your life?
«I like listening to music and I have always thought it was an exceptional way to convey messages and provoke emotions. When The Portrait of Dorian Gray came out I felt I wanted to put one of my thoughts in a musical text, then I did it, without too many plans or strategies. That said, I am not a singer and at the moment it is not my goal to undertake a musical journey, I reassure everyone! Rosalba is the one of the two who is investing a lot in it and I am delighted that she has managed to make a record ».

Did success change your life?
«Radically! It would be hypocritical to say otherwise. But, as far as the values are concerned, those have not changed. I am the same Edoardo from years ago, who believes in friendship more than anything else and who wants to entertain those around him ».

Any advice for who would like to be Sespo tomorrow?
«Many are convinced that working on the web is a piece of cake. From the outside, the hours of fatigue behind it are not perceived. You have to get ideas, organize everything, keep in touch with companies, shoot, edit, respond to comments. If you do something we like, the work weighs less, but to succeed in every field you need a lot of commitment ».
