Google will pay $ 3.8 million to settle a case in which it is accused of underpaid female employees and unfairly denying women and Asian jobs. This was reported by the US Department of Labor.
The charges stemmed from yet another law enforcement review conducted several years ago in accordance with Google’s status as a company providing services to the federal government.
The Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs found “preliminary signs” that from 2014 to 2017, the search giant sometimes underpaid 2,783 women in its software development team in Mountain View, California.
Investigators also found that during the 12 months ending August 31, 2017, when hiring a software developer in San Francisco, California, and Kirkland, Washington, female or Asian candidates were disadvantaged.
The settlement includes $ 2.6 million in arrears to be paid to 5,500 employees and job applicants. The remainder of the amount will go to pay adjustments to the company’s employees in Mountain View, Kirkland, Seattle and New York over the next five years. Any unused funds will be spent on “maintaining diversity” at Google. In addition, the regulator called on Google to review its hiring and remuneration practices.
