The Civil Police of Rio Grande do Sul heard, late this Tuesday (26), the singer Seu Jorge, in the investigation of racism against him during a show in Porto Alegre.
The artist gave a video statement to the head of the Police Station for Combating Intolerance, Andrea Mattos. “He didn’t hear the racist insults, even because he had a headset and has the issue of returning the sound to the stage. And he learned through social media,” said the delegate, that he is expected to hear from the band’s musicians and team members next week. She also said that the singer decided not to return to the “encore” because of the loud boos he received as soon as he left the stage.
According to Andrea, eight people have already given statements. Two said they heard racist abuse against the singer. Others said, informally, that they witnessed the crime, but had not yet been to the police station.
“We got in touch with these people who also reported [ter ouvido as ofensas racistas], but they are afraid to go to the police station. Anyway, we sent the video to forensics to see if we can improve the audio quality,” she explained. The delegate’s objective is to convince witnesses to appear at the police, without having to subpoena them.
According to the investigation, Seu Jorge was the target of racism during a performance at the Grêmio Náutico União club, on the night of October 14, in Porto Alegre. The offenses would have occurred shortly after the musician left the stage and made an “L” with his hand. The gesture is a sign of support for the candidacy of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
Part of the audience responded with boos and shouts of “myth”, in reference to President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who is seeking reelection. However, reports on social networks and videos recorded at the show, point out that some people in the audience made racist swearing.
