Seven-month pregnant woman wins Mathematics Olympiad in RJ and goes to the USA

Without knowing or studying, Mariana Cavalcanti Leão, 16 years old, took the Carioca Mathematics Olympiad test and won the gold medal. The student was seven months pregnant at the time of the assessment and the 9th grade teacher preferred not to tell her that it was about the test, since the girl is usually nervous on test days and, with pregnancy, it could be even worse.

The student, resident of Campo Grande, in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro, is among the 141 students from the municipal network who stood out among the more than 400 thousand students registered and, therefore, embarked this weekend for the United States. The 72 boys and 69 girls, accompanied by 57 professionals from the Rio Municipal Department of Education, are heading to Florida, to visit Disney and pay a visit to NASA.

“It is very emblematic to have children from our municipal network at Disney and NASA. It makes them believe that they can get wherever they want – and they really can. Therefore, we promote the trip, so that our students can see how putting effort into their studies can impact their lives. I myself am the result of the Mathematics Olympiads, I won some medals, which allowed me to reach greater heights”, stated the municipal secretary of Education, Renan Ferreirinha.

The students embarked with travel kits that included a thermal shirt, blouse, coat, socks, sneakers, suitcase, backpack and squeeze bottle. Each student also received $500 for purchases.

Excited about the trip, but her heart is heavy about leaving little Miguel, who turns one on January 31st, Mariana makes plans to bring a gift for her son. During the trip, which is scheduled to return on February 4th, the boy will stay with his grandmother, an unemployed cleaning assistant, and his 10-year-old uncle.

The Carioca Mathematics Olympiad has existed since 2021, with the aim of stimulating the learning of the subject, engaging and identifying talents, as well as promoting healthy competition among students in the network. The competition is aimed at students, from the 2nd to the 9th year of Elementary School, enrolled in the public network.
