Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicate that Brazil is the country with the highest number of anxious people: 9.3% of the population. For women, the concern is even greater. A survey by Think Olga, a non-governmental social innovation organization, revealed that 7 in 10 diagnoses of anxiety and depression were from women.
Among the reasons given for the high rate of these diagnoses is the overload of demands at home and at work, as well as other issues.
“We cannot deny that the majority of women work outside the home and still manage household chores. We still fight against the stigma that “caring” is only a feminine task, many studies show how we are getting sick, and this is not new”, explained the psychologist and postgraduate professor at PUC do Paraná, Mariana Holanda.
According to the study, both anxiety and depression are also connected to financial problems, as there is a pay gap between men and women who occupy the same job positions. “A woman who does the same thing as a man earns 30% less. Is this stimulating?” asks the psychologist.
In addition to mental health, there are problems related to physical issues as well. According to the Brazilian Public Security Forum, the number of femicides in 2023 increased by 1.6% compared to the previous year. It forms almost 1,500 cases.
