Seven soldiers were killed in two attacks in Mali, a Sahel country torn apart by jihadist violence, the staff said.
Five soldiers, driven by an armed vehicle, were killed early in the afternoon when an improvised explosive device exploded in Segou, about 200 kilometers northeast of the capital Bamako, a staff statement said.
A clearing operation in the area where the attack took place, driving “in the arrest of two suspects”, who were handed over “to the gendarmerie” immediately after, according to the text.
Earlier, two soldiers were killed and three others were injured when they were ambushed near Mourdia, about 200 kilometers north of the capital, according to the army, which clarified that this report is temporary.
Despite the intervention of the French mission Barhan, the UN and the joint force of the five Sahel states, Mali has been the scene of frequent and bloody jihadist attacks since 2012, in which conflicts between communities are involved. Thousands of people, mostly civilians, have been killed and millions more displaced.
The violence, which was initially raging in the north, spread to the central country, especially after the emergence in 2015 of a jihadist organization under Amandou Koufas, a preacher belonging to the Pel tribe. It has also spread to neighboring states, Burkina Faso and Niger.
