Seven states offer help to Pernambuco amid heavy rains

At least seven Brazilian states have already mobilized to send teams from the Fire Department and help the population of Pernambuco, which has been facing heavy rains since last week.

According to the government of Pernambuco, 84 people have died since last Wednesday (25), 56 are missing, 3,957 are homeless and 14 municipalities have declared a state of emergency.

On Sunday night (29), twelve firefighters from Bahia were on their way to Recife to assist in the search and rescue of victims in collapsed structures. Rio Grande do Norte also authorized the dispatch of eight firefighters, in addition to a sniffer dog.

Paraíba, another state that also faces heavy rains, sent a team. Amazonas, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais also made their corporations available.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued the first rain alert on the northeast coast on May 20, but rainfall in Pernambuco began to intensify last Monday (23).

In three days, 194mm were recorded only in the city of Recife, an index that is among the three highest in the city’s history, behind only maximums in the 1970s (335.8mm) and 1986 (235mm).

The City Hall of the capital has already structured 41 shelters to welcome people and suspended classes in the municipal network. More rain is forecast for this Monday (30).

Governor Paulo Câmara made R$100 million available for search and rescue work and also for urgent and infrastructure works in the affected municipalities.

In addition to Pernambuco, four other states in the northeast have also had rain alerts since the last week.

Alagoas, another heavily affected state, declared a state of emergency and recorded 2,102 homeless people and 8,017 homeless. In Paraíba, 14 people were displaced after the rupture of a dam in Pocinhos, in the Agreste region. Rio Grande do Norte and Sergipe also recorded rains beyond expectations.
