Several factors explain Covid bed queues in Rondônia, says infectious disease

Contrary to the Brazilian average, the state of Rondônia returned to register lines per bed for Covid-19 treatment, after 8 months of normalized situation.

In an interview with CNN Radio, Juan Villalobos, infectologist, researcher at Fiocruz and Professor at the Federal University of Rondônia, explained that there is a “sum of events, and not an isolated factor” that caused the condition.

The deactivation of many field hospital beds when Covid’s second wave passed, the loss of immunization over time for those who became infected in the first and second waves, and unwanted vaccination coverage all contributed to the picture.

According to the infectious disease specialist, “the first dose was applied to a large part of the population, but the second and the booster dose are not at the same pace.”

Villalobos also informed that his technical group met with representatives of the Health Department and that they informed that the “reactivation of beds would be one of the measures that could be taken and that it would be relatively quick.”

“It implies that you will have to hire health people again, open beds again, bring respirators that many were loaned to other municipalities, to increase the supply”, he added.

The researcher also said that he believes it is “fundamental to carry out a campaign to raise awareness of the importance of complete vaccination, we are seeing that more than 80% of hospitalized patients who develop serious conditions are in the non-vaccinated group.”
