Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome cases continue to rise among children

This Wednesday’s edition of the InfoGripe Bulletin (9) points out that, despite the maintenance of the scenario of decline in the general population, the incidence of cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in children has shown a significant rise in several states over the years. February.

Until the beginning of this month, children from zero to four years old had the highest incidence among the population under 40 years old.

The age groups of 60 years and over remain the groups with the highest weekly record of cases and deaths from Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) with positive laboratory results for Covid-19.

The analysis carried out in the period from February 27th to March 5th highlights that the national curve maintains a sign of decline in the long-term (last six weeks) and short-term (last three weeks) trends.

The study also indicates that the SARS-CoV-2 virus remains predominant among the positive laboratory results for respiratory viruses in all age groups analyzed.

According to the survey, none of the 27 federative units show a sign of growth in the long-term trend until the week followed.

However, four show signs of growth only in the short-term trend: Ceará, Distrito Federal, Espírito Santo and Sergipe. With the exception of Roraima, which shows stability in the long-term trend, all the other 26 federation units show a sign of decline.

Regarding the capitals, none shows signs of growth in the long-term trend until the week in question. In only six, there was evidence of growth only in the short-term trend: Boa Vista (RR), Florianópolis (SC), Fortaleza (CE), Goiânia (GO), Teresina (PI) and Vitória (ES). With the exception of the capitals Boa Vista (RR), Fortaleza (CE) and Vitória (ES), which show signs of stability in the long-term trend, all others point to a decline.

Data for the last three weeks point to a mostly stable scenario, suggesting a possible deceleration or interruption of the downward trend.

Researcher Marcelo Gomes, coordinator of InfoGripe, explains that changes in long-term behavior, such as the use of a protective mask, require a cautious interpretation in light of possible fluctuations in the number of cases.

“In situations like this, it is recommended that any new measures that are being planned in light of the downward trend are suspended for a reassessment of the trend in the following weeks. On the other hand, in the long-term growth trend and a sign of stability or decrease in the short term, the principle of caution and risk minimization recommends that any measures associated with downward trends be taken only when the long-term trend also indicates a decline”, he comments. .

Regarding the use of the protective mask, the specialist defends that it be kept in closed places, especially because of the scenario among children, who have not yet completed the vaccination schedule against Covid-19.

“Of course, it depends a lot on the evaluation of the reality of each municipality and the regions of influence, due to urban mobility, whether for work or leisure. But the ideal is not to rule out the use of personal protection in closed places” – recommends the researcher.

SARS cases

In the last four SEs, the prevalence among positive cases was 0.7% Influenza A, 0.1% Influenza B, 5.2% respiratory syncytial virus, and 87.4% Sars-CoV-2.

Deaths from SARS in the country

In 2022, 17,421 SARS deaths were recorded, of which 14,341 (82.3%) had a positive laboratory result for some respiratory virus, 2,273 (13.0%) were negative, and at least 397 (2.3%) were awaiting laboratory results. . Among the positives for the current year, 4.1% are Influenza A, 0.1% Influenza B, 0.2% respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and 94.4% Sars-CoV-2. In the last four epidemiological weeks, the prevalence among positive cases was 0.4% Influenza A, 0.1% Influenza B, 0.3% respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and 97.3% Sars-CoV-2.
