Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome in children shows signs of decline in the country

Data from the Infogripe Bulletin of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) released this Wednesday (20) show signs of a decline in Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) across the country, including among children.

Researcher Marcelo Gomes, coordinator of InfoGripe, observes that the incidence of SARS in children — which has shown a sign of significant rise in several states since February — shows a plateau formation and the beginning of a decline, reflecting a fall in the national curve.

Estimates point to 3.7 (3.2 – 4.4) thousand cases in Epidemiological Week 15 (period from April 10 to 16, 2022), of which about 1.8 (1.4 – 2.5) thousand are in the range of 0 to 4 years.

The new laboratory data indicate a predominance of cases associated with RSV, with 66.4% among those positive in the last 4 weeks in the age group from 0 to 4 years and 23% in the age group from 5 to 11 years.

Regarding the rhinovirus, the prevalence of cases was 36% and, for Sars-CoV-2 (Covid-19), it was 28%. According to Gomes, in the national aggregate, the scenario is one of stabilization in all age groups of the adult population.

Eight of the 27 federative units show signs of growth in the long-term trend (last six weeks). These are: Acre (AC), Amapá (AP), Mato Grosso (MT), Pará (PA), Piauí (PI), Paraná (PR), Roraima (RR) and Rio Grande do Sul (RS). Alagoas (AL) and Paraíba (PB) show signs of growth only in the short-term trend (last three weeks).

“In all these locations, the data by age group suggest that this is a scenario restricted to the child population”, highlights Gomes.

Regarding the capitals, eight of the 27 show signs of growth in the long-term trend: Belém (PA), Cuiabá (MT), Curitiba (PR), Florianópolis (SC), Macapá (AP), Porto Alegre (RS), Porto Velho (RO), and Rio Branco (AC).

In total, 30 health macro-regions are at pre-epidemic level, 21 at epidemic level, 64 at high level, two at very high level and one health macro-region at extremely high level (Corumbá/MS).

In the last four epidemiological weeks, the prevalence among cases with a positive result for respiratory viruses was 1.6% for Influenza A; 0.2% for Influenza B; 41.5% for RSV; and 37.4% for Sars-CoV-2 (Covid-19). As for deaths, 1.6% were due to Influenza A; 0% for Influenza B; 7.8% by RSV; and 79.8% by Sars-CoV-2 (Covid-19).

The study is based on data entered in the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System (Sivep-Gripe) until April 18
