Over 30cm of snow expected to fall in the Northern Plains and Midwest USA within the next 24 hours, according to forecasters, while the same barometric system threatens tornadoes and severe storms many areas of the South.
After dumping about 1 foot of snow in Nebraska and South Dakota, the powerful blizzard is moving east and another 30-45 inches may fall in southern parts of South Dakota and Minnesota, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
The same low barometric pressure is causing rainfall and the possibility of tornadoes along the Gulf of Mexico coast. North Mississippi could see hail, meteorologist Allison Santorelli said.
Around 70 flights were cancelled this morning at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, specialty website FlightAware reported.
Meanwhile, in California, the northern coast was hit by heavy rain over the weekend and there is a chance of flooding with another storm expected tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday. Combined with strong winds, residents should be prepared for downed trees and power outages, Santorelli said.
As reported by APE-MPE, more than 21,000 households and businesses were without power this morning, according to poweroutage.us.
