Severo Luzardo, carnival artist of the União da Ilha do Governador, dies

A few weeks away from the fashion shows Carnival of Rio de Janeiropostponed in January, due to the advance of the variant omicron of the coronavirus, the party lost one of its important names. At the age of 59, Carnival artist Severo Luzardo died on Saturday (12), a victim of lung cancer he had been treating for three years.

Gaucho from Uruguaiana, Severo Luzardo began his career as a costume designer. Currently, he was in charge of work in the sheds of União da Ilha do Governador which, this year, will parade in the Gold Series, equivalent to the second division of the party.

The carnival went through other associations in Rio, such as Império Serrano, Paraíso do Tuiuti and Acadêmicos do Cubango, from Niteroi.

He also worked in Rio Grande do Sul schools: he was champion of Uruguaiana with Os Rouxinóis and, in Porto Alegre, he worked at Bambas da Orgia.

As a costume designer, Luzardo has worked in film and television productions, with an emphasis on soap operas. The União da Ilha do Governador declared official mourning for the death of the artist, who signed three parades for the association: “Nzara NDembu”, in 2017, “Brasil bom de boca” (2018) and “The poetic struggle between Rachel and Alencar on the Avarandado of Heaven”, in 2019.

In 2022, the school on Ilha do Governador will bring to Marquês de Sapucaí the plot “The prayer seller”, which seeks to exalt faith in Our Lady of Aparecida, patroness of Brazil. Severo signs the parade alongside the carnival artist Cahê Motta.

The artist’s body will be veiled this Sunday (13), between 1 pm and 3 pm, at the União da Ilha do Governador court, in Cacuia, North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. There is still no information about the burial.

The last work by Severo Luzardo can be seen by the revelers on April 20, when the group will be the fifth to perform, on the samba catwalk, on the first day of the Gold Series parades.
