“Sex and the City”: why Kim Cattrall should stop with the digs and step aside

If we were in the mind of Kim Cattrall it is not difficult to imagine what emotions we would feel in these remnants of summer that already smell of nostalgia: the joy of reading the comments of the fans who write that the revival of Sex and the City it won’t be the same without her and the atavistic hatred of seeing the posts of Sarah Jessica Parker who, every other week, shares the anticipation and the frenzy for those new episodes in which she, Kim Cattrall, has chosen not to participate. Hard to say right now if the actress saw us along or not – although early script details leaked from Page Six they imply that And Just Like That, which will arrive on HBO Max in 2022, will be a Sex and the City heated but with the protagonists more agè -, ma there is no question that Cattrall is putting himself in the wrong way towards this revival.

For at least six years he has repeated in interviews that a third film of Sex and the City would have had no reason to exist, extinguishing the enthusiasm of her colleagues who, faced with the question, the only one which journalists were really interested in, said they were possible, hopeful, confident that a new chapter would bring them back into the limelight, bringing them to scrape together the same fortune they made in the golden years. It must be said that, unlike many actresses and many actors who first say one thing and then, when faced with the check, they forget everything by throwing down the bitter morsel, Kim remained consistent: she always said that Samantha Jones, one of the main reasons why we put up with Carrie’s complaints, has nothing more to say and that we would need a generational change, a new actress, maybe Hispanic, who can give the character those nuances that she feels she has exhausted. A logical reasoning that, however, would be even more acceptable if Cattrall stopped playing games and left the revival alone, at least until it hits HBO.

The post that Cattrall shared on Instagram in which she winks in an unflattering way at Sarah Jessica Parker, with whom she never got along even at the time when Sex and the City was winning prizes and making millions, it is, unfortunately for her, a fall in style which Samantha, who retained her dignity even as she climbed the stairs of an Atlantic City hotel in a pair of pearl panties, would never forgive. Cattrall made a conscious choice: he will not return in Sex and the City. The production, Parker and everyone else will continue, as expected, to say in interviews that everything is fine, that the door for Samantha will always be open and that they respect her choice, and she, Kim Cattrall, when she does not give instructions. precise to his publicist to forbid any question about the series, he will shrug and come out with a brilliantly poisonous sentence. The truth, however, is that we could only agree with Kim after seeing the revival: if it will be the umpteenth failed operation at the Beverly Hills 90210 we could shake her hand and hear her say, with a touch of pride, “I told you so.” Until then, though, we recommend that Cattrall keep a low profile, devote himself to filming the new season of Sensitive Skin and to avoid gnawing when the newspapers headline that Nicole Ari Parker will be the new her: the ship has sailed, the games are closed and the only desirable thing right now is to wait. We both know that Samantha is irreplaceable and, for this very reason, there is no point in firing cartridges now, especially when she was the one who made a point. For the rest, as the sage says, calm is the virtue of the strong.
