The Civil Police of the Federal District (PCDF) launched an operation to dismantle a gang specialized in extorting money from people through the threat of publishing intimate photos and videos of victims on the internet.
According to investigations, criminals created fake profiles of attractive women on social media to gain victims’ trust and induce them to share intimate photos and videos.
After obtaining the material, the criminals blackmailed the victims, demanding cash payments under the threat of exposing the images to family, friends and co-workers.
During the operation, agents seized electronic equipment used in the crimes. The material will be analyzed by the Criminalistics Institute to identify other possible victims and accomplices.
The operation began with the arrest in the act of a suspect who received extortion money. From there, the police identified and arrested the group’s intellectual mentor at his home.
The operation was called Blackmail and was carried out through the Special Police Station for the Repression of Cybercrimes (DRCC).
“The gang members will be responsible for the crimes of extortion, false identity, criminal association and money laundering. The penalties for these crimes can reach 27 years in prison”, explains police chief João Guilherme Carvalho, responsible for the investigations.
The police also warn about the risks of sharing intimate content online and advise victims to contact the police station to file a police report.
