Shanghai carries out mass Covid-19 tests every weekend until the end of July

Shanghai will require all 16 of its districts to carry out mass Covid-19 diagnostic tests for residents every weekend until the end of July, a city official said on Wednesday.

Zhao Dandan said all districts will organize “community testing” every weekend.

If a district finds any community transmission during the week, it will need to conduct a thorough screening during which all residents will be subject to movement restrictions until testing is complete, he added.

In China’s zero Covid policy concept, “closed management” generally refers to restrictions that prevent people from leaving their residential communities or workplaces.

In China, the detection of a single positive case can put an entire building or community under government quarantine and put several nearby neighborhoods under lockdown for two weeks.

Since the loosening of restrictions on June 1, Shanghai has continued to report cases of Covid, including among residents outside the quarantine areas. As a result, an increasing number of neighborhoods have been put back under strict quarantine.
