Shanghai: Target to stop coronavirus transmission outside quarantined areas by Wednesday

Shanghai has launched a “road race” to curb it coronavirus, having set a goal by Wednesday to put a brake on its transmission outside the quarantined areas. This emerges from statements by officials, who added that if all goes well, the hardening of the hard lockdown will begin to gradually begin the return to normalcy.

The goal requires officials speed up diagnostic tests and case transfer to quarantine centersaccording to a speech by a local Communist Party official yesterday, a copy of which was seen by Reuters.

Shanghai has become the focus of the largest outbreak of the disease recorded in Chinaafter the virus was first identified in late 2019 in Uhan and has recorded more than 320,000 infections with Covid since the beginning of March when the resurgence began.

Shanghai residents in lockdown are struggling to find food and have lost income, while protesting the separation of families and the poor conditions in quarantine centers. Closed factories and traffic jams in many parts of China due to restrictions on Covid-19 have an impact on global supply chains.

Shanghai’s new target for “Zero Covid Cases at Community Level” by April 20, it had been announced in recent days to Communist Party officials and organizations such as schools, according to sources, who asked not to be named because the information had not been disclosed.

The Chinese definition of Covid Zero Cases at the community level means that no new cases occur outside quarantined areas.

A speech by the party’s secretary general in Shanghai’s Baoshan district yesterday described the new target as an order that came as the situation in the city reached a “critical juncture”, with public concern and rising food supply pressures.

“The State Council Working Group, the party’s municipal committee and the municipal government have called for a turning point in the epidemic to be reached on the 17th and the level of zero Covid cases to be reached on the 20th (April),” Chen Jie said in a speech. .

“This is a military order, there is no room for negotiation, we can only grit our teeth and fight for victory. “It can also be said that this is a total attack, a last battle to reverse the trend of the epidemic,” he added in his speech.

The Shanghai Government and the State Council of China did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Telephone communication with the Baosan regional government was not possible outside of business hours today.
