It is common for girls to dream of having a XV years party where they wear a beautiful dress, blow out the candles on a cake and dance the waltz with their chambelanes. However, this was not the dream of Keren Salas, who changed her celebration for her own business.
The young woman, originally from Sonora, Mexico, said that when planning the celebration, she realized the expenses that it would generate and raised things: the party would only last one day, while a business could last for years, giving it financial independence and turning it into a quite an entrepreneur.
At just seven years old, Keren entered the business world selling apples on the streets and from door to door in the state of Sonora. Later, her family moved to Baja California, Mexico. When she got there, she continued to sell it and created a small portfolio of clients, who recognize her as “the apple girl.”
About to turn 15, Keren and her parents began the preparations for her party, but knowing the great investment that would be made and how little it would take advantage of, the young woman chose to change her party for a permanent business. Her parents supported her and she was finally able to open a store in a well-known shopping mall.
Set things up, the 15th birthday party lasts only one day. Yes, we were planning it and about a month later I said: ‘No, thanks, I’d better start a business.’ A month ago the opportunity presented itself and here we are.
I wanted to set up my own business on the island of desserts so that I would no longer be selling out in plazas and so that my desserts could be found in a fixed place.
Ivonne Zayas, Keren’s mother, said that her daughter showed a great interest in sales since she was a child and seeing her interest in starting a business in a formal way, they did not hesitate to support her and give her the best birthday present.
I started out selling chopped fruit, but I realized I didn’t know how to use a knife at the age of seven and we kept looking until we found the covered apples.
Keren called her business manzamania and offers apples covered with all kinds of chocolate, cookies, tamarind, among other ingredients. In addition, the young businesswoman is already looking to open more branches, she is studying high school and is writing a book that she will title From Apple Seller to Young Entrepreneur.
