Sharon Stone reveals she lost custody of her son over controversial scene in Basic Instinct

The actress Sharon Stone revealed that the longWild instinct (1992) was crucial to the loss of custody of their son during divorce proceedings in 2004.

On Bruce Brozi’s Table for Two podcast, the star told how her role in the psychological thriller, directed by Paul Verhoeven, jeopardized the custody process for her then-four-year-old son Roan. During the trial, the judge asked the boy if he knew that his mother made “sex movies”.

Stone and Phil Bronstein were married in 1998, six years after the film’s release. In 2000, the couple adopted Roan Joseph, and in 2004, they divorced. Although they shared custody at first, the actress lost custody of her son during the process.

The film yielded one of the most controversial and famous scenes in cinema, when the actress crosses her legs without wearing underwear. “People are walking around with no clothes on now on TV shows, and maybe you saw possible nakedness of me for 16 seconds and I lost custody of my son.”

The court ruling allowed Sharon Stone to visit her now 22-year-old son. This decision contributed to her being hospitalized at the end of the same year, with heart problems.

Still on the podcast, the actress said she was upset when colleagues at the 1993 Golden Globe ceremony laughed at her nomination for the same film.

“It was horrible, I felt humiliated. Does anyone have any idea how difficult it was to play this role? How harrowing and scary was it?” she questioned. “We took this complex film that was breaking barriers and everyone was protesting against it.”

Even with the court decision, she and Roan maintained a close relationship, and in 2019, the boy filed legal documents to put “Stone” in his last name. Since July 2022, he has been called Roan Stone.
