Shawn Mendes says sexuality “is a wonderfully complex thing” and that we should all stop questioning

The words that Shawn Mendes pronounced during his last concert regarding his sexuality confirm something of which we are increasingly certain, namely that every day they tell us that we live in the era of fluidity and the most absolute sexual freedom when the truth is that, all ‘outside the social bubble, many of us are desperate for a label because the label protects and reassures you. The need to find a definition of oneself and a niche within which to move, rather than synonymous with emancipation, risks becoming a dangerous limit because those who cannot find their own label could automatically feel wrong or even lost. Known people know something about this and have always been forced to listen to the chatter surrounding their private lives, trying to resist the provocations of others as much as possible.

And if someone, like the young protagonist of Heartstoppers Kit Connorat a certain point he had to admit his nature because he was unable to handle the invasive questions that came to him in interviews, others like Shawn Mendes try to resist. During the last stage of his For Friends and Family Tour at the historic Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado, Mendes told the public he was tired of speculation about his sexuality, admitting something sacrosanct: that sexuality “is a wonderfully complex thing”. Mendes says that he has yet to discover his sexuality just as thousands of people in the world have to discover it, and the fact of pointing the finger at a society that seems obsessed with discovering at all costs who we take to bed for no one knows well which reason, whether out of curiosity or morbidity, was very courageous.

«People have been talking about my sexuality for a long time, even if sexuality is very difficult to pigeonhole: it always felt like an intrusion into something very personal to meconsidering that it’s something that I was understanding in myself and that I had and have yet to discover,” says Shawn Mendes from the stage. «The truth about my life and my sexuality is that, dear friends, I’m just figuring it out like everyone else. And it really scares me because we live in a society that seems to have a lot to say about it. I’m trying to be brave and allow myself to simply be a human being who has feelings. And that’s all I want to say about this matter for now”, comments Mendes sacrosanctly. What if we stopped worrying about being classified and enjoyed the journey of discovery that everyone goes through peacefully, without giving weight to what others think?
