A mum says she is still breastfeeding her 5-year-old son Bowie and makes it clear that she doesn’t care about the negative comments she receives about her decision. 29-year-old Lauren McLeod also rejects criticism that she is abusing the child, saying she will continue to offer him her milk.
“I never thought I’d be breastfeeding my child at 5, but I’m like any other mum who does the best she can for her children,” she recently told the South West News Service.
The Australian mother emphasizes that this is not something “weird or sexual” but something “completely normal”. She also says she will continue to breastfeed until her son wants to stop.
McLeod hoped her son would stop him breastfeeding around the age of 2, as both she and her husband breastfed as babies up to that age. Her daughter Tigerlily, who is 2, also continues to breastfeed.
Bowie nurses three times a week before bed, while Tigerlily eats “whenever she wants”.
According to her, people “say very bad things” and she believes that these comments come from “a lack of education, but no one has ever said anything in front of me.”
Some have called her “disgusting” and “abusive” and accused her of not feeding her child normal food. She calls the accusations ridiculous and says that “of course she gives him food.”
“I think we’re doing the right thing for us. It’s something beautiful that binds us together after a long day.”
In fact, McLeod also breastfeeds her friend’s baby, who doesn’t want a bottle, when she babysits. And while she says it’s “a little weird” feeding a baby that isn’t hers, she notes that it feels “natural” and she’s happy to help her friend.
