A reality star has opened up about the terrifying battle she fought when she forgot to take off her tampon her. The contestant in Love Island UK Maura Higgins revealed she could have died after accidentally leaving a tampon inside for three months.
The 31-year-old spoke about her terrifying experience on a British talk show in an effort to raise public awareness of syndrome toxic shock. The Irish woman was in serious danger after forgetting to take out a tampon, which left her feeling unwell day after day.
Maura said she couldn’t figure out what was causing her illness but was shocked when a doctor discovered the three-month-old tampon attached to her neck. “I had a really bad experience,” she told ITV’s Shopping With Keith Lemon. “I’m not doctor but I know you shouldn’t leave a tampon in for more than nine hours, I think that’s the maximum” she said and added “I had a tampon in me for three months”broadcasts the nypost.
“When the doctor found it, it was stuck to my cervix. I was so sick. “I didn’t know what was going on,” he said. Toxic shock syndrome can be deadly and is caused by certain strains staphylococcus bacteria that enter the body and release harmful toxins.
It’s usually associated with tampon use, but it can also occur if bacteria enters the body through one open wound. Maura explained that the shame and stigma that can often surround her issue menstrual health may be one reason why many are unaware of toxic shock syndrome.
“Young girls might not have noticed,” she said. “Like going on a night out, what if you get really drunk and forget about it. These things actually happen and the people don’t talk about ithe underlined.
“I remember even at school, I would take my tampon out of my bag, put it up my sleeve, and then go to the bathroom like that. “I’m thinking, why did I do this? It’s nothing to be ashamed of, that’s why I think it’s an important issue, isn’t it?’ he wondered.
