This Monday, Blue Origin announced the names of the six people who will fly aboard the New Shepard rocket on the aerospace company’s next suborbital spaceflight. Among them is that of Katya Echazarreta, the first woman engineer born in Mexico to go into space.

The announcement was made known through a video conference shared on the Twitter account of the non-profit organization Space for Humanity (S4H).

You go to space! We are delighted to introduce our first female astronaut, Katya Echazarreta! We surprised her on a call with the news that she will be going into space on Blue Origin’s NS-21 mission.

The 26-year-old will be part of the Citizen Astronaut Program, whose mission is to send leaders into space to help expand access for all of humanity. Space For Humanity announced that its selection committee chose Katya to become the organization’s first citizen astronaut ambassador as a role model and representative of a minority. In addition, she reported that she will sponsor her place aboard her flight NS-21 on Blue Origin’s mission to space.

As a Mexican engineer working in the space industry, I know firsthand how few we are. I have always believed that it is not enough to achieve your goals if you do not help others to grow with you. I began to work diligently to help not only students in the United States who have high aspirations like mine, but also students and women in Mexico who hear the same words I’ve heard too often: ‘it’s not for you.’
