When Sarah Regan went to change his 9 month old’s diaper baby her, he found with horror that she was covered in blood. Panicked and afraid that little Birdie might have a problem with her kidney, the 38-year-old mother rushed the child to the intensive care unit in 2020, where doctors proceeded with the necessary tests.
Doctors ran ultrasounds, hormone tests and X-rays, finding that her bones were developed and at 18 months she was diagnosed with precocious puberty, before she could even walk or talk.
“This was her first period”said the Sydney mother Australia in the Kennedy News. “I didn’t know what to think, we didn’t know much about it and we hadn’t heard of it before.”
According to Stanford Medicine, precocious puberty rarely occurs in children and involves physical signs of sexual maturity that appear very soon.
Because Birdie, who is now just over 2 years old, is so young, it’s hard to tell if she has other symptoms, such as mood swings or period pains. “He doesn’t have hair or breasts, which some other kids do,” says Regan.
The mother-of-three, who also has 10-year-old Zachary and one-year-old Elsie, admitted it is difficult to explain what is happening to her daughter. “At daycare, I felt like I had to explain that if they find blood in her nappy, that’s what happens and we have a doctor’s note saying there’s nothing to worry about. That is the biggest obstacle.”
However, the mother stresses that it is important for people to know. “I don’t want people to rest. If blood is found in a toddler’s underwear, that’s something that needs to be investigated.”
