Multiple complaints they were made for the mentally ill woman, who had become known in her neighborhood for collecting piles of garbage in and around her house.

The woman's brother had disappeared several years ago, but during her arrest for an unrelated case it was revealed that the skeleton it was inside her house. In addition to his bones, officers at the home also found garbage from floor to ceiling, a rat and human excrement.

A Victoria Police spokesperson told news.com.au that police went to an address in Newtown, Geelong, to check on a male resident on December 28, 2022. “Officers attended the Russell Street property at approximately at 6 pm and located the man dead inside,” the spokesperson said, according to “New York Post'.

Neighbor Nicole Stratton said the “absolute dirt» inside the house he had hidden the stench of the corpse, which was decomposing. “There was always a smell, but we just thought it was thepiles of garbage“, said the 31-year-old. “The blinds were always down. The house was constantly littered with rubbish. There were rats everywhereit was really disgusting». Ms Stratton said many residents had complained.

“We complained to the relevant authorities about the chaos and they would do checks, but he never opened the door for them,” he said. Ms Stratton added that the situation was shocking for residents. “My oldest daughter still doesn't want to go out at night, she's scared,” she said. Another resident, who did not want to be named, said the lack of action was maddening. “I can say with certainty that no routine inspection or welfare check was done on this person for at least a year and possibly more,” he said. “You have residents raising all these concerns and (complaints included) fall on deaf ears. So you start to wonder what's going on. It 's crazy”.

A spokesperson for the City of Greater Geelong (CoGG) confirmed to the 'Geeolong Advertiser' that complaints had been made about the situation before the man's lifeless body was discovered. The DFFH spokesman said the “welfare checks” began from 2021, following growing concerns about the lack of contact, lack of access and poor condition of the property. “This is a tragic incident”, the spokesman said. The woman who lived next to the body has not been charged in her brother's death.
