Sheldon Adelson, the gaming magnate who dreamed of building Eurovegas in Madrid, dies

Sheldon Adelson died this Tuesday at the age of 87 due to cancer, according to his company announced in a statement. The American magnate, one of the world leaders in the gaming business, groped for months at the construction of a casino complex in Madrid that was colloquially called Eurovegas, as a European transcript of the emblematic city of Nevada.

That version of Las Vegas never came to fruition, despite the fact that the founder of the Las Vegas Sands group had the approval of the regional government in 2012, chaired by Esperanza Aguirre, but the project gave so much to talk about that it remained in the imagination of the country. Finally, the Executive of Mariano Rajoy refused to comply with any of Adelson’s claims, which went on to request anything from a modification in the Anti-Smoking Law to tax exemptions for gambling activities. At the end of 2013, the national government of the PP formally rejected the requests of the businessman, who on the other hand had run into various bank obstacles to financially support Eurovegas.

Adelson raised a total investment of about 18,000 million euros for the complex located in Alcorcón, in addition to the creation of tens of thousands of jobs, just when the previous crisis, caused by the bursting of the real estate bubble, severely hampered the Spanish economy. The plan involved the launch of six casinos and a dozen vacation resorts, as specified at the time by Las Vegas Sands.

The 28 richest and 28 million euros

Adelson, born in Boston, Massachusetts, is considered the great international magician of the game and used to appear on the lists of the greatest fortunes on the planet. Forbes A few months ago, it attributed 33,500 million dollars (27,500 million euros) to him and placed him as the 28th richest person in the world.

The businessman stands out on the international board of casinos from Las Vegas Sands, the largest company in that segment in the US, of which he is CEO. The Bostonian empire began to take shape in 1988, with the acquisition of the hotel y casino Sands, emblematic for hosting the illustrious performances of the so-called Rat Pack, in which characters such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. converged. In the early 90’s, Adelson dedicated himself to the construction of the Venetian, the Venetian hotel and casino, with canals and gondolas that still stand out among the main attractions in Las Vegas to this day.

Supposedly, the inspiration for that resort came from Adelson’s honeymoon with his wife, Miriam Adelson, who has announced the death: “It is an unbearable shame to have to announce the death of my husband, Sheldon G. Adelson, at the complications with a long illness [un linfoma]. Sheldon was the love of my life. He was my partner in love, philanthropy, political activism and business, my soul mate “, has expressed his wife of 32 years, his second marriage.

The Israel a Trump

Indeed, Adelson has mobilized his fortune for various reasons and of course the protection of the interests of Judaism and Israel has always been among his priorities. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is one of the best-known friends of this businessman, who in recent times has come to demand clearer threats from the US to cut off any nuclear race attempts by Iran.

In politics, Adelson has lent his support to various Republican candidates, usually without their donations translating into electoral successes, but Yes, he was right in endorsing the Donald Trump campaign, which won the US presidency for a term that would end this January.

As his widow has emphasized, Adelson’s life corresponds to that of a self-made man. Starting in Las Vegas, this entrepreneur has built casinos in Macao (China) or Singapore, although the Madrid dream never came to fruition (in fact, when Las Vegas Sands stated its resignation from Spain, it recognized its intention to focus the business on Asia). Adelson has also been interested in the press, with appearances in headlines in places of interest, whether it be Israel or Las Vegas.

This “son of an immigrant family”, as Miriam has recalled, achieved success in business “thanks to his strength, genius and integrity. His was the story of all American entrepreneurs.” Adelson has Ukrainian and Lithuanian Jewish ancestry from his father, while his mother came from the UK; one was driving a taxi; the other ran a sewing shop. Sheldon founded a unique empire.
