Shell and Raízen partner with USP to produce hydrogen from ethanol

Shell Brasil and Raízen have entered into a partnership with the University of São Paulo (USP) for the production of renewable hydrogen (H2) from ethanol supplied by Raízen, the companies reported this Thursday (1st).

The construction of two plants sized to manufacture 5 kg of hydrogen per hour is planned and, later, the implementation of a plant 10 times larger, at 44.5 kg/h.

A vehicular gas station for buses transporting students and visitors to the University City will also be implemented on the USP campus, replacing the current combustion models, powered by diesel.

“With start-up scheduled for 2023, the initiative emerges as a low-carbon solution for heavy transport, including trucks and buses, with the first hydrogen ethanol station in Brazil and in the world,” Raízen said in a statement.

The project will be financed by Shell Brasil, through the Research and Development clause of the regulator ANP, with an investment of approximately R$ 50 million.

The technology will be developed and manufactured by Hytron, of the German group Neuman & Esser (NEA), with support from Senai Institute for Innovation in Biosynthetics and Fibers of Senai Cetiqt.
