Shelters in RS have special programming for Mother’s Day

This Sunday (12), many families in Rio Grande do Sul spend Mother's Day in shelters, after having their homes taken over by the rain. Some organizations prepare special actions in order to try to comfort these mothers in the face of the situation they face. Among the activities, there is vase painting, a solidarity lunch and a beauty salon.

This is the case of the AFISVEC shelter, located in the south of Porto Alegre. There, the children, from the beginning, receive a lot of care from volunteer teachers, a team of doctors and entertainers, as he told CNN Shaiane Ribeiro dos Santos.

Shaiane and her three young children arrived at the shelter on Sunday (5) and have already been there for a week. Her husband went later, he preferred to stay at home trying to control the situation, but the water took over the property and he needed to be rescued. Throughout the week, the couple has been trying to ease their thoughts and be with their three children.

For this Sunday, they had plans to visit their mother-in-law, as they used to do every year.

“Every Mother’s Day we went to my mother-in-law’s house. We had a barbecue, we talked and spent the whole day there. Unfortunately, her house also flooded,” said her mother.

In an attempt to celebrate the date, the organization of the shelter where Shaiane is with her three children prepared activities throughout the day.

There, of the 100 people sheltered, 40% are women. The program includes a special lunch prepared by volunteers. The menu is chicken with pasta.

For the organization, this meal is “a symbolic gesture of affection and care for those who are facing extreme difficulties”.

Furthermore, during the afternoon of last Saturday (11), the children painted flower pots to give to their mothers.

During the afternoon, mothers will be able to get their nails and hair done thanks to a partnership between the shelter and a hairdresser in Porto Alegre.

Action brings comfort to families

Shaiane says that the care she has been receiving is “fundamental”.

“Children have no idea that it's something bad… My seven-year-old daughter doesn't understand what's happening, but the people who understand things are shaken. This care for my children is very important”, she adds.

For this Mother's Day, she says she hopes it will be “light”, without thinking about what has already happened. “I want to enjoy the day with my family, because what matters is being with them. We look for material goods later, the important thing is that we are united”, she concludes.
