The suspect in Sunday’s (15) apparent assassination attempt on Donald Trump was so calm when he was arrested that the situation was “perplexing,” the sheriff of Martin County, Florida, told CNN this Monday (16).
“He was very relaxed,” Sheriff William Snyder told CNN on Monday. “Honestly, he looked like someone who had just left the church picnic and was heading home,” he added.
Despite the commotion surrounding his apprehension — the area was “swarming with police, with a SWAT team that had rifles out, helicopters, a bomb dog” — the suspect never asked why he was stopped, Snyder said.
“He was really calm, like he was going to dinner,” the sheriff said.
The stop occurred after the sheriff’s office received an alert with a description of the vehicle, Snyder said.
A highway patrol officer spotted the vehicle, followed it for a few kilometers and waited for specific trucks to arrive to force the vehicle to stop, he added.
Officers then conducted a traffic stop and removed the man from the vehicle safely into custody.
Ryan Wesley Routh will appear in federal court on Monday.
At the moment, Snyder’s main concern, according to his words, is investigating whether anyone else was involved.
“Are we tracking a conspiracy?” he asked. “That’s the question I think needs to be answered.”
