Former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba today won the race to lead Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and replace outgoing Prime Minister Fumio Kishida as Japan’s next leader. The winner of the LDP leadership race is certain to become prime minister, given the party’s control of the powerful lower house of parliament. Ishiba defeated Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi in a runoff election held after none of the nine candidates won an outright majority in the first round of voting. It was Kishida’s fifth attempt to head the LDP. Takaichi, a staunch nationalist, aspired for her part to become Japan’s first female prime minister.
