A man opened fire in the back at former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, while the politician was making a pre-election speech in an open space. Abe had no vital signs, according to the fire department in the western Japanese city of Nara.
He was in a state of “cardiopulmonary arrest” when an ambulance took him to a hospital.
Watch video of the moment of the attack:
A Japanese government spokesman said Abe was attacked by the gunman at around 11:30 a.m. (local time). The man who fired at the politician – Japan’s longest-serving prime minister (2006-2007, 2012-2020) – has been arrested and the gun he used seized by police, media reports said. According to initial information, he is a 42-year-old man.
The police, contacted by AFP, were unable to provide further details about the attack.
The former head of government was giving a speech ahead of Sunday’s Senate election when he was shot, according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK and the Kyodo news agency.
Shinzo Abe collapsed bleeding from the chest and neck, a img close to his faction, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), told the Jiji news agency.
The information that “former Prime Minister Abe (…) is in a state of cardiorespiratory arrest”, was first reported by NHK, using the terminology of the Japanese authorities when death simply remains to be declared by a medical examiner.
