Shipwreck in Garganta do Diabo: “No one was wearing a vest”, says survivor

The Brazilian Navy is investigating whether the boat “La Linda”, which sank last Sunday (30), in São Vicente, with seven people on board, was in a regular navigation condition. According to the São Paulo Port Authority (CPSP), due to the loss of documentation during the sinking, it was not possible to confirm the identification and characteristics of the boat. An administrative inquiry was launched in order to identify possible causes and determine responsibilities, according to the CPSP.

The wreck threw the seven occupants of the boat into the sea, in the Garganta do Diabo region, close to Porchat Island, on the coast of São Vicente. The victims were returning from a party aboard a larger boat.

Five people, including the vessel’s pilot, were rescued by the Fire Department and Navy rescue teams. They received medical care and are doing well. Two women – Beatriz Tavares da Silva Faria, 27, and Aline Tamara Moreira de Amorim, 37 – disappeared at sea and are still being sought .

One of the survivors, student Camila Alves, 20, said in a video posted on her social network that the boat’s occupants were not wearing vests. “When the boat capsized, no one was wearing a vest. And none of the girls knew how to swim”, he reported. “I don’t know how to swim. Bia (Beatriz, the missing woman) and Vanessa (Audrey, survivor) didn’t know how to swim. When the boat capsized, the boat had three life jackets and two gallons of gasoline. Everyone grabbed hold and everyone tried to save their lives,” he said.

Camila said that, to survive, she tried to throw herself onto the rocks and cling to a rock. She suffered several injuries, including a deeper cut to her head. He also said that he swallowed a lot of water and that the vests and braces helped him float.

Investigations

The information provided by the vessel’s driver is that the boat was registered with the name “La Linda”, being six meters long. The hull was built in aluminum, but, according to the Navy, it has not yet been possible to determine its capacity. The CPSP may order the owner or the responsible company to rescue the vessel for examination.

The wreck will also be investigated by the Civil Police, but until this Tuesday, the 1st, those involved had not been interviewed. One of the points to be investigated is whether the boat offered safety conditions for its occupants. The place where the sinking occurred is considered critical for navigation.

Late yesterday afternoon, the Mar Fire Brigade (GBMar) reported that the search for the two missing women continued with two Fire Department vessels, two land vehicles and a Military Police helicopter, as well as a Navy vessel.

“Operations are being concentrated in coastal areas close to where the accident occurred, with the aim of covering the largest possible area and increasing the chances of locating the victims,” said the corporation. The actions are taking place from 7am to 7pm.
