Shipwreck in Pará leaves at least 14 people dead; 70 were on board

A vessel with 70 people sank this Thursday morning (8) near Saudade beach, in Cotijuba, 22 kilometers from Belém (PA). According to the Pará Public Security Secretariat, at least 14 people died, and another 30 people were rescued. The boat would have left the island of Marajó bound for Belém.

The SSP, Belém City Hall, the Military Police and the Fire Department work together in the rescue. One helicopter and 9 vessels are engaged. The victims are being directed to the Basic Health Unit (UBS) of Cotijuba, to the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) of Icoaraci and to the UBS Marambaia.

The Agency for the Regulation and Control of Public Services of the State of the State of Pará (Arcon-PA) informed that it had already notified the company responsible for the vessel, that it was not authorized to carry out the intercity transport of passengers, and communicated to the Port Authority about the irregularity of the case, which departed from a clandestine port in the town of Camará, Marajó.

The Municipality of Salvaterra, municipality of Ilha de Marajó, declared three days of official mourning for the tragedy and canceled the festive events to commemorate the 105th anniversary of the district of Condeixa, which were to take place this Thursday (8).
