At least two people were killed when their boat sank off Venezuela.
Seven people were rescued.
The boat had departed from the eastern state of Delta Amakuro to Trinidad and Tobago, as reported by AMPE.
The new tragedy was added to a series of shipwrecks with migrants trying to reach the two Caribbean islands where about 40,000 of its citizens have migrated. Venezuela due to the economic crisis in their country. Many travel on old, overloaded boats with little fuel.
Delta Governor Amacuro Liseta Hernandez said in a press release on Saturday night that the boat left the village of La Orceta on April 23rd. The victims were a man and a woman, whose details are still unknown.
The news site Tane Tanae in Delta Amakuro reported that 24 people were on board, citing information provided by survivors.
“We are in solidarity with the families of the Venezuelan citizens who have unfortunately lost their lives,” Ms Hernandez said in a statement.
At least 20 bodies were found off the coast of Guiria, a seaside town in the eastern state of Sucre, in December. In 2019, at least two vessels departing from Venezuela for Trinidad and Tobago disappeared into the sea.
More than 5 million Venezuelans have immigrated in recent years, as the once thriving Latin American country economy collapsed. The government signed an agreement with the UN World Food Program on April 19th to distribute school meals to students in need.
