Shocked Case: police conclude that young woman who died forged messages to comedian

The civil police of Minas Gerais concluded, this Wednesday (6), the investigation into the death of young Jéssica Canedo, aged 22.

According to the investigation, the young woman died after ingesting a high dosage of medication, in December 2023, days after forging messages with comedian Whindersson Nunes and publicizing an alleged relationship with the artist on gossip pages on social media.

According to delegate Felipe Oliveira, from Araguari, who led the investigation, Jéssica created three fake profiles on the internet. Firstly, the police identified that these profiles originated the news and, based on their breach of confidentiality, they were able to prove that the young woman was the author of the messages.

Later, when the young woman's supposed relationship with the comedian was reported, she began to suffer attacks on social media. Jéssica already suffered from depression and was undergoing treatment when the case came to light.

The police identified the message sent to the victim by an 18-year-old woman, resident of Rio das Ostras (RJ), in which she suggested that the young woman take her life.

The author of the message was the only one charged in the case, for the crime of instigating suicide. She and the victim had no relationship, nor did they know each other.

During the investigation, the police interviewed the young woman's mother, two of her friends, the comedian Whindersson Nunes and representatives of three social media gossip pages, including Choquei, which was not held responsible for publishing the false content.

The investigation was referred to the Public Ministry.

Remember the case

The Minas Gerais Civil Police began investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of young Jéssica Canedo, which occurred on December 22, 2023, in Santa Casa de Araguari, after ingesting a high dosage of medication. The case was treated as a suicide from the beginning.

Jéssica Canedo died after gossip profiles published false information that she had had a relationship with comedian Whindersson Nunes – which the artist himself denied. Choquei, which at the time had around 21 million followers on Instagram and almost 7 million followers on X, reposted the news about the fake relationship.

In a note published at the time of the events, Choquei's defense, signed by lawyer Adélia de Jesus Soares, stated that they “deeply regret what happened” and that there was “no irregularity” in the information published and that the posts were made with “data currently available.”

“The Choquei profile, through its legal advice, comes to clarify to its followers and friends that there was no irregularity in the dissemination of the information provided by this profile. It should be clarified that there is no responsibility to be attributed for the acts carried out, given the action in good faith and regular compliance with the proposed activities”, he declared.

The note also says that “the commitment of this profile has always been and will be with legality, responsibility and ethics in the dissemination of information within the limits established in the Federal Constitution”.
