After passing through the Caribbean, Storm Beryl hit Texas on Monday with heavy rains that caused flooding and massive power outages, while killing at least five people in the southern US. Four people were killed in the Houston area, according to the city’s mayor and local police. A municipal police officer died in flooding while trying to get to work, Mayor John Whitmire said, adding that one more person was killed in a fire caused by lightning. Two other deaths linked to falling trees were reported earlier yesterday by local authorities.
