Shocking shark abuse in Cyprus: They caught him by the gills and took a selfie

Strong reactions have been caused in Cyprus the images that have seen the light of day in the last few hours, and show the abuse of one shark caught by a tourist boat.

As reported by sigmalive.gr, its capture shark off Larnaca, the NGO Enalia Physis Environmental Research Center condemned.

According to the NGO, “fishing shark of the species Hexanchus griseus, commonly known as Pampakaris / Exavrangios, is not prohibited under the Amateur Fisheries Act, but in the event of accidental catch of any shark or skate should be released immediately, with the least possible maximizes the chance of its survival “.

“In the photos and the video, it is clear handling of the kind by the owners / employees of the specific tourist boat. Despite reports that the animal was subsequently released alive, the abuse “The risk of the animal dying after its release is significant,” said the Enalia Physis Environmental Research Center.

In fact, despite the information that the shark was released, the NGO lists a number of reasons why the shark does not seem to have survived:

1. Treatment / grabbing by gill slits. The gills are the organ that allows the oxygenation of blood in fish. Simply put, they are the lungs of the fish. The published material shows the treatment of the shark by the gill slits. This alone can confirm that the organ that allows the animal to breathe has been severely damaged, especially after so much pressure has been exerted. Although the animal may appear to be alive after release, it is in fact in a process of slow death.

2. Blood on deck. A photo shows the animal on the deck of the boat with blood flowing from the gills, which further confirms the damage caused to its gills.

3. Enough time out of the water. Fish can be permanently brainwashed after being left out of the water due to lack of oxygen. From the photos it is clear that the animal remained out of the water for an extended period of time, since after its capture a process of photographing and demonstration on the boat followed.
