Shocking are the images recorded in a video of the explosions that caused a fire in an ammunition storage facility in Kazakhstan.
Nine members of the armed forces and firefighters were killed and 90 others were injured, authorities in the Central Asian country said today. Four people remain missing, the government said.
It is not clear what caused yesterday’s fire at a military base in the southern province of Zabil where explosives used in projects were stored, Defense Minister Nurlan Germekbayev told a news conference.
Soldiers and firefighters were killed trying to put out the blaze, which caused ten explosions, he said, adding that the stored explosives came from facilities in the city of Aris after a similar incident in 2019 in which four people were killed.
In a separate development, Germekbayev told the local branch of Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty that he had resigned following the accident, according to the Athens News Agency.
Authorities evacuated hundreds of people from the surrounding area and closed the main road connecting the province with the larger city of Almaty.
