Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced the start of mass production in Russia of fully autonomous combat robots. According to him, the Ministry of Defense is preparing for the introduction of “military equipment of tomorrow”, which is equipped with artificial intelligence, which allows them to independently conduct hostilities. This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to an interview with the head of the department within the framework of the New Knowledge marathon.
Shoigu confirmed that the launched project is not experimental – we are talking about the very robots, “like in science fiction films.” The first robotic complex of the Russian army will include 20 units of strike vehicles. The tests will take place at one of the research centers of the Ministry of Defense.
Automatic weapons using artificial intelligence technologies have become one of the priority areas for the Ministry of Defense. Currently, several Russian defense enterprises are developing combat robots under government contracts. Among them:
- “Companion” for the protection of territories and intelligence from the concern “Kalashnikov”;
- drones based on the T-72B3 tank with heavy weapons and automatic cannons from Uralvagonzavod;
- Marker land platforms (two wheeled and three tracked) from the Advanced Research Fund (FPI), with the help of which key technologies of ground robotics are being developed – technical vision, navigation, autonomous movement and application, group control.
