Two gunmen opened fire at a rural branch of the University of Panama, killing one young man and wounding another, police and university officials said.
The unidentified gunmen arrived at the Veraguas regional college where a group of first-year agronomy students were gathering to work on a soil project, said the college’s director, Pedro Samaniego. This campus is part of the university and is located 155 kilometers west of the capital.
“A vehicle stopped and two people got out, shooting at a group of people who were on campus,” Veraguas Police Chief Hector Delgado said in a video message.
Alvaro Leones suffered a fatal injury and another student, Anel Terreros, was taken to the hospital, Samaniego said.
An investigation was opened but no arrests were made, said a police source who declined to be identified. The cause of the crime has not yet been clarified.
Shootings at schools or universities in Panama are very rare.
In a statement suspending administrative work and classes, the university condemned the violence and expressed condolences to Leones’ friends and family.
“Leones was an exceptional member of our university community,” said university president Eduardo Flores. “His tragic departure represents an irreparable loss to our institution.”
